In this corner I will write or copy an article which I will find suitable for the visitors of my web page to enjoy their stay in the ephemeral space.

This time I will talk about photographic issues because as you might have noticed, I love photography.

Avoiding Red-Eye:

If you use a portable flashgun for portraits, you will encounter red-eye. This is caused by flash reflecting back off the retina in your subject's eyes, and usually occurs if the flash is positioned too close to the lens, i.e. on the camera's hotspot.

Most compact cameras and SLR's with an integral flash have some kind of feature which helps to reduce red-eye. Usually, one or more pre-flashes fire to reduce the size of the subject's pupils before the main flash fires.

If you don't have this facility, or find that it doesn't work effectively, here are some tips to reduce the risk of red-eye:

Ask your subject to look towards a light source such as a table lamp before taking their picture.
Bounce the flash off the ceiling so it's not hitting your subject directly.
Take the flashgun off the camera and hold it to one side-you will need an extension sync cable to connect the gun to your camera.
Ask the subject not to look straight into the camera lens.

Catching emotion:

The best portraits are those which capture a sense of your subject's personality. To do this successfully your subject must feel at ease in front of the camera. You can also encourage an emotional response by the way you approach your subject-if you know they feel particularly strongly about something, start talking to them about it.

The easiest way to capture emotion, however, is by shooting candidly, so your subject is unaware of the camera. That way, they don't have the opportunity to put up a front and hide their emotions.

special family occasions provide the chance to do this; weddings and christenings always bring out a range of emotions. keep your camera ready and take pictures discreetly. Usually, everyone is so wrapped up in what is happening that they don't realize they are being snapped.

Natural poses look best and it is worth spending some time studying your subject's mannerisms such as what they do with their hands, before picking up the camera.
